Hello Students, Parents and/or Guardians,

This year in History we will be studying many diverse cultures. We will travel to ancient Rome, witness the Black Death in Medieval Europe and explore the innovations of the Renaissance in Europe. We will cross the Sahara by caravan to Mecca then explore Africa’s great Empires. Our journey then takes us to Asia to visit a Japanese town and onto an exploration of China’s dynasties. Then finally, we visit the civilizations of the Americas and tour their monumental structures.

In order for all to succeed throughout the year every student must follow class and school rules, come prepared to work in every class and complete assignments to the best of their ability.  The following guidelines will be beneficial in keeping you organized and “on board” throughout the year.

Expectations and Requirements of Students

Attendance:  Regular and prompt attendance is necessary for success. Excessive absences will result in a lower grade. Some activities may not be made up if you are absent. Make up assignments will not always be available (ie. group work) If you are absent, make up your work as soon as possible. On the same day you return:

§                     Ask a RESPONSIBLE student about the homework and class assignments

§                     Get all handouts from the teacher and ask any questions.

§                     Complete your missing work as soon as possible and come in for extra help before/after school.

Tardiness: Students must be seated and ready to work when the bell rings. The teacher will excuse the class when the final bell rings. Violations will result in an in class suspension after school. Excessive tardiness will result in a call to parent/ guardian and then a referral. In short, do NOT be tardy!

Assignments:  Homework is an important part of your success in our class. You will be given homework Monday - Thursday with occasional projects. These must be written in your student planner. On the occasions when we are engaged in active history (group projects, class dramas, skits) there may be less homework during those days. The majority of work will be completed in your spiral notebook.  Any long range papers or projects are due on the day they are assigned. No exceptions. Homework questions should be asked before or after class. Proper heading in top right corner (Name, date, WH followed by class period) should be on all work not in notebook. Late work will not be accepted. Missing assignments will be given a zero. Time can be arranged for extra help when needed.

Quizzes and Tests:  Tests will cover class lectures, assigned textbook work, and class discussions. Exams could consist of multiple choice, short answer, matching, true/false and or be project orientated. Tests may also be given orally. Oral and pop quizzes can not be made up. Make up tests will only be given for tests missed due to an excused absence and must be taken on the next day of attendance, unless there is an extended illness. Students are responsible for notifying the teacher of make up tests upon their return form an absence. Tests not made up upon return will result in a zero score. Any cheating will not be tolerated and administration will be notified as well as parents/ guardians.

Notebook:  Students will maintain a spiral notebook for all class work and assignments. Notebooks should be a 5 subject, with pockets with wide pages to glue a handout on without overlapping the page (11x9). Notebooks must be brought to class each day. Notebooks may be collected and checked at any time during a unit of study. In order to receive and “A” on your notebook you must follow the following notebook guidelines:

1.      Must be neat, organized and no loose pages

2.      All work must be complete and effort to show quality

3.      No blank areas or pages are accepted, you can add extras in those areas with information related to the current unit of study. (examples like highlight a person, clarify vocabulary, draw pictures)

4.      Be organized by having page numbers, clear headings, straight lines and graphs

5.      Use color to enhance (color key vocabulary, outline charts, color headings, pg. #’s, add pictures)

6.      Be creative and add pictures where you can!

7.      Complete the summary and get parent/ guardian signature at end of the unit.

8.       All notebooks will be collected at the time of the unit test. Parent/ Guardian Signature on cover page of each unit.

Supplies:   You are expected to bring all materials to every class:

·                   spiral notebook specifically for history , 11x9 , 5 subject with pockets (glued in pages should not overlap pages)

·                   2 pencils (mechanical or sharpened prior to class)

·                   Small elmers glue

·                   colored pencils to be used daily for notebooks (no color pens, they soak through notebook pages)

·                   lined binder paper

·                   highlighter and red pen for corrections

·                   ruler

·                   box or zipper pouch to hold supplies is a great idea

·                   Small pair of scissors

·                   folder to hold any handouts not keep in notebook

Ø  Student planner must be keep organized and updated with weekly assignments that will be copied on the first day of the week. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to check the planners daily for HW, projects, upcoming tests/quizzes. This is a useful tool for communication and to check on student daily progress. Occasionally, I will write comments and have students write in their current grades and ask them to collect parent/guardian signatures next to comments/grades.
